TVS Cable is a small, independent cable operator serving customers in the southeast part of Kentucky. As General Manager David Thacker puts it, the team is always looking for ways to improve customer service — and in an era of remote work and expanding competition, the stakes have never been higher.

With subscribers depending on their home broadband connections for their livelihoods, even minor service imperfections can prompt customers to start shopping for alternatives. TVS’s support teams were fielding calls from areas with recurring signal quality issues, and the pattern was clear: reactive troubleshooting was putting the operator permanently on the back foot.

TVS Cable was an early adopter of Harmonic’s Beacon solution, and Harmonic’s team worked closely with TVS technicians throughout the onboarding process. Rather than simply showing the gains already achieved, the Harmonic analytics team also mapped out the additional improvements still within reach — giving TVS a clear roadmap for continuous network optimization.

Beacon works by continuously analyzing RF conditions across the cable plant and automatically adjusting modem modulation profiles to maintain the highest stable QAM level for each subscriber. Where other tools leave modems cycling unpredictably across profiles, Beacon holds them steady — delivering a consistent, reliable experience even in plant segments that previously generated chronic complaints.

The integration gave TVS’s technicians new visibility into their network: they could now see at a glance which areas had Beacon active, compare modulation profile stability between Beacon and non-Beacon segments, and quantify the direct impact on support call volumes.

The results:
Up to 44% drop in support calls & customers who simply stay online

The impact exceeded expectations. TVS conducted controlled testing — turning Beacon off in areas where it had been active — and the difference was stark. Without Beacon, modems across those segments jumped erratically between QAM profiles. With Beacon on, they stabilized immediately.

In one problem area, inbound support calls dropped by 44%. Across other areas measured, call reductions ranged around 30% — still a highly significant improvement by any operational measure. The effect was clear enough that TVS’s own tech support team began asking questions: they noticed that areas that once generated habitual complaints had simply gone quiet.

When David explained that Beacon had been switched on in those areas, the reason became obvious: Subscribers in Beacon-enabled areas simply stopped experiencing problems. They stayed online, stayed productive, and stopped looking at competing providers. For a small independent operator where every customer relationship counts, that outcome translates directly to retention and long-term revenue.
