IBC2016 Highlights

A look back on our announcements, demos, awards & more.

PURE Video. PURE Innovation. PURELY Harmonic.

Organizers say IBC2016 broke attendance records with over 55,000 attendees from more than 160 countries. For these attendees, we did our best to demonstrate our clear and efficient path to the future, enabling operators to support the latest innovations in IP, cloud-native, virtual reality, UHD HDR, virtualized playout and DVB-T2 technologies. Following are some of the highlights.

Immersive 360 VR with Native UHD Resolution

We showcased the industry’s first native UHD VR technology demonstration in collaboration with Dutch research institute TNO. Powered by TNO’s HEVC tiling technology, the trailblazing demo enabled a completely immersive VR experience on head-mounted devices, with video resolution 10 times higher than that offered by existing commercial VR services. In addition, with NASA we released a spectacular 360-degree virtual reality experience featuring astronauts training for future missions to the International Space Station. The stunning video kept the booth busy and has been a hit on NASA’s YouTube and Facebook channels.

Cloud Native Media Processing and Delivery

As cloud technologies continue to gain momentum, Harmonic showcased its technology leadership with the new VOS™ cloud-native solutions VOS Cloud and VOS 360. Visitors saw the monetization opportunities enabled by cloud-based media process solutions and services, such as cloud DVR and packaging-on-the-fly.

Compression Improvements for OTT

Announced at our pre-show press conference, Harmonic EyeQ™ real-time video compression optimization solution was a big draw. The new solution delivers a superior viewing experience on internet-connected devices while reducing OTT bitrates by approximately 50 percent.

End-to-End UHD HDR Workflow

UHD HDR continues to be a hot topic and there was a side-by-side demonstration of the latest HDR technologies as well as a complete end-to-end UHD HDR workflow.

IBC IP Interoperability Zone

There is no doubt that one of the biggest themes at IBC 2016 was the migration from SDI to IP. We were thrilled to be a contributor to what many consider the largest interoperability demonstration ever to have taken place. Harmonic Spectrum™ X servers were used as part of the demonstrations for IP transport, showing support for SMPTE ST 2022-6 and VSF TR-03. The booth traffic was tremendous throughout the show.

Thought Leadership in Action

On the conference program front, Thierry Fautier, Harmonic’s VP, Video Strategy, presented his paper “Exploring New Ideas in VR & 360° Immersive Media” as well as participated in a number of UHD sessions. Jeff Koehler, VP, Solutions Engineering, was part of the exciting “Live from Space – NASA and Imaging”

Plus We Won a Few Awards

The VOS 360 cloud media processing service captured the IABM Design & Innovation Award, as well as TVBEurope’s Best of Show Award. In addition, IBC awarded one of its highest honors, the Judges’ Prize to NASA for the NASA TV UHD channel. Harmonic played a pivotal role in helping the channel become a reality.
