Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today unveiled the Rhozet® Workflow System (WFS) Appliance, a fully-integrated, enterprise-class transcoding server solution that delivers remarkable performance while reducing operating expenses by easing installation, configuration and management. WFS Appliance brings together the powerful and extensible Rhozet WFS task-based workflow engine, which automates management of the video asset transformation process, with robust enterprise hardware and Harmonic’s appliance software framework.
When combined with Harmonic’s powerful ProStream™ 5000, a file-based transcoding device incorporating Rhozet Quality Control System (QCS) and Carbon Coder™ universal transcoding software, Harmonic delivers a turnkey, universal transcoding platform solution that requires minimal OPEX investment.
“This new solution offers the best of both worlds by combining the reliability, scalability, broad format support and quality output of Harmonic’s market-leading file-based transcoding solutions with the cost benefits of a pre-configured, fully integrated, hardware/software platform. This powerful, yet cost-effective solution meets the high-volume transcoding requirements of broadcast facilities and professional studios,” said Tom Lattie, Rhozet General Manager at Harmonic.
The pre-configured WFS Appliance allows for lower cost of ownership by reducing many of the IT challenges related to operating a large transcoding farm. By offering a function-specific appliance, Harmonic is able to customize the operating system environment, providing essential security management enhancements that simplify product and system updates.
At the heart of the WFS Appliance is the WFS task-based workflow engine for automated management of the video asset transformation process. WFS improves scalability, efficiency and reliability for media companies’ most demanding transcoding needs with an open and distributed workflow
When integrated with the ProStream 5000, WFS Appliance provides a highly optimized hardware and software combination with established performance benchmarks. The ProStream 5000 is a powerful and dense file-based transcoding device that boasts an unprecedented 16-processor core in a single rack-unit (1-RU). Advanced quality control features are delivered through Rhozet QCS which brings file-based quality testing and automated compliance into the transcoding process, significantly reducing the amount of manual intervention required to guarantee high quality output.
WFS Appliance also manages large-scale networks of Carbon Coder transcoder nodes in a distributed “farm” configuration. The distributed nature of WFS allows for automated processing of high-volume transcoding tasks, failover support, job distribution, job prioritization, dynamic load balancing, file transfer, status monitoring, and job notification. Harmonic customers can easily add WFS Appliance to their existing Carbon Coder farms to gain the scalability and management benefits that WFS Appliance provides.
Harmonic’s Rhozet family of universal transcoding solutions facilitate the creation of multi-format video for Internet, mobile and broadcast applications, and will be on display at Harmonic’s stand #1.C61 at the IBC exhibition in Amsterdam, September 10-14.
