Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that its award-winning Electra® 8000 multi-channel HD/SD universal encoder and ProStream™ 4000 real-time multi-screen transcoder have completed compliance testing for the Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) platform. The test for both systems was administered by Microsoft Corp. as part of the Microsoft Mediaroom Interoperability and Qualification Lab (IQ Lab) program, which is intended to enable the ongoing interoperability and compliance of headend equipment used in deployments of Microsoft Mediaroom. Harmonic powers the video headend infrastructure for a majority of Microsoft Mediaroom customers worldwide.
Microsoft Mediaroom enables unique connected TV features and experiences, such as simultaneous recording of multiple high-definition and standard-definition TV channels, personal media sharing, whole-home and remote digital video recording (DVR), and multiple picture-in-picture (PIP) scenarios. The award-winning platform is delivering connected TV experiences to more than 4 million subscribers worldwide.
Service providers that want to deploy Mediaroom-based IPTV services using an existing headend infrastructure can benefit from the real-time transcoding capabilities of the ProStream 4000 platform to generate up to 46 PIPs in one rack unit from MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) IP sources. Operators can also benefit from a more integrated and more efficient network with the best-in-class Electra 8000 multi-channel encoder, which supports HD/SD video delivery with simultaneous secondary output for PIP and converged multi-screen applications.
“Harmonic’s Electra 8000 platform offers high quality, bandwidth-efficient HD and SD video, coupled with multi-format, multi-channel capabilities. This versatile system, as well as Harmonic’s support for picture-in-picture with the ProStream 4000 from any IP input, can help facilitate migration to Mediaroom for service providers,” said Jonathan Usher, Marketing Director for the Media Platforms Business at Microsoft.
“A wide range of Harmonic’s video processing systems have been certified as compliant for Mediaroom, meeting the evolving compression and transcoding needs for any IPTV service provider,” said Thierry Fautier, Senior Director of Converged Solutions at Harmonic Inc. “We have worked with Microsoft on numerous deployments to ensure high quality, bandwidth-efficient video for IPTV services, and the Electra 8000 and ProStream 4000 are highly flexible and efficient solutions for IPTV operators choosing to deploy Mediaroom.”
