Comprehensive Solution for Compression, Statistical Multiplexing, EdgeQAM and Network Management Powers More New HDTV and HD VOD Services in China

Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Shenzhen Topway Video Communication Co., Ltd., one of China’s leading cable operators offering advanced digital video services, has expanded its HDTV and VOD services with Harmonic headend and edgeQAM solutions. With this new deployment, Shenzhen Topway Video Communication retains its leadership position in the region by delivering 13 channels of high quality HDTV programming, and offering new HD VOD services and enhanced on-demand capabilities, such as time-shifted TV, to its one million subscribers.

Shenzhen Topway Video Communication selected an integrated Harmonic solution — encompassing ProView™ integrated receiver/decoders (IRDs), Electra® 7000 MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) HD encoders, ProStream™ 1000 stream processors, NSG™ 9000 edgeQAMs, and NMX Digital Service Manager™ — based on the unrivalled performance, enhanced video quality, and significantly improved bandwidth efficiency offered by Harmonic.

“Harmonic’s digital video processing expertise is evident in their world leading stream processing and edgeQAM solutions,” said Shangbao Mai, Vice President of Shenzhen Topway Video Communication Co., Ltd. “With this upgrade, we have invested in a state-of-the-art infrastructure that expands our digital cable offering with value-added services including broadcast and on-demand HDTV and advanced time-shifted TV capabilities.”

“Shenzhen Topway Video Communication Co. is a digital TV leader in China, and Harmonic was instrumental to their original deployment,” said Raymond Tse, Vice President of Asia Pacific Sales for Harmonic Inc. “With this HD and VOD technology upgrade, Shenzhen Topway gains unparalleled flexibility, outstanding value, and a seamless path to continued best-in-class service delivery for its subscribers in Southern China.”

The ProView IRDs are used to receive and decode digital content sources, and Harmonic’s Electra 7000 AVC encoders enable Shenzhen Topway Video Communication to efficiently deliver up to four full resolution variable bit-rate (VBR) high definition services within a single 1-RU chassis rack unit. The modular 1-RU ProStream 1000 stream processing platform handles multiplexing and scrambling of the MPEG streams, while the NSG edgeQAM platform provides reliable edge processing for on-demand services. NMX Digital Service Manager offers Shenzhen Topway Video Communication an easy-to-use yet powerful solution for network configuration and management.
