Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Insight Communications, a top ten U.S. cable operator named MSO of the Year by CableFAX Magazine in 2008, has deployed a full complement of Harmonic’s digital video technologies for an extensive network upgrade, including SD and HD encoders with integrated video/audio re-encoding technology and distributed statistical multiplexing. Harmonic’s fully integrated, IP-based solutions enable Insight to reduce capital expenses, power consumption, and system operating costs, while delivering unmatched video quality and an expanded service portfolio.
Harmonic provided system integration and commissioning services for this project, which included system upgrades in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. Harmonic’s solutions are being used to power Insight’s Digital 5.0 service, which features over 330 channels and a crystal clear HD line-up of up to 58 channels. Insight also utilizes Harmonic’s market-leading NSG™ 9000 universal edgeQAMs to power its on-demand offering of over 7,500 titles monthly, as well as NMX Digital Service Manager™ to manage the complete video network infrastructure.
“We are very satisfied by the great video quality of Harmonic’s compression and stream processing solutions,” said Abraham Naghibi, V.P. of Advanced Video Engineering, Insight Communications. “With this upgrade, we have invested in a state-of-the-art, fully IP-based infrastructure that can seamlessly support our recently expanded digital cable service.”
“Insight is highly-regarded throughout the U.S. cable industry for its market leadership,” said Gil Katz, Senior Director of Cable Solutions and Strategy, Harmonic Inc. “Insight was an early provider of VOD services in the U.S., and Harmonic was instrumental to Insight’s original deployment. With the new Digital 5.0 service and this technology upgrade, Insight has transformed its digital cable offering. Harmonic’s solution set provides Insight with unparalleled flexibility, outstanding value, and a seamless upgrade path to continued, best-in-class service delivery.”
Harmonic was named the world’s encoding market share leader with 28 percent of channels shipped in 2008 by research firm In-Stat, with Harmonic and Scopus (acquired by Harmonic in March 2009) together accounting for 37 percent share. Leading cable MSOs in the United States and around the globe rely on Harmonic’s comprehensive portfolio of digital video stream processing, software, edge and HFC access solutions to power their broadcast and on-demand services.
