Telkomsel is the leading mobile operator in Indonesia. To evolve their technology strategy and offer more of what subscribers want, they envisioned a mobile app for live sports streaming. Telkomsel had plans to launch its new OTT service in time for the 2018 world soccer championships. The games were only weeks away and they needed to set up their OTT service fast.

Video quality for OTT live sports streaming is essential and Telksomsel required robust scaling to seamlessly handle peak viewing times.

The Solution

Harmonic set up Telkomsel’s service in just a few weeks. Powered by Harmonic’s VOS®360 Video SaaS and EyeQ content-aware encoding technology, Telkomsel’s MAXstream OTT service simply provides viewers with the highest QoE.

During the 2018 Soccer World Cup, Telkomsel used VOS360 to deliver OTT live sports streams to 550K concurrent viewers, for 64 games. With VOS360, Telksomsel could launch new live and VOD channels faster, and without building a technical platform.

The Result

The success of the launch and the quality of service was rewarded with 4M new OTT subscribers in just over 4 weeks. Their growing subscriber base proved that viewers were hooked, and wanting more.

The pay-as-you-grow model made it possible for Telkomsel to expand its offer. They have since added 21 live OTT channels for over 2.1M engaged sports fans, and also VOD content. With the support of Harmonic’s VOS360 platform, Telkomsel now has the momentum to just keep on growing.
