DASH: Why Is it Important?

February 12, 2013
1-Minute Read

We’ve talked about what DASH is and why it’s important, and how it’s poised to help improve the future of multiscreen video delivery. If you haven’t seen it, Streaming Media has a great interview with Microsoft’s senior technical evangelist on why 2013 will be the year DASH finally goes mainstream. But what does that mean for you today? Should you be looking for a solution right away, or is it better to wait for broader adoption? Every provider is different, so there’s no one right answer for everyone; however, this is an excellent time to consider what’s best for your company regarding DASH.

This is a great opportunity to be an early adopter. Not a lot of devices support DASH right now, but that’s expected to change in the very near future. For companies that are comfortable being the first out of the gate, setting up DASH capabilities right now means that they will be able to support those shiny new DASH devices the minute they hit the street. The “DASH today” option is essentially the future-proofing option.

Current non-DASH technology; however, is still quite good. Companies that would rather wait to jump on the DASH train until wider adoption is in place can do very well sticking to existing tech for the time being, and switching over once DASH has a stronger market foothold. These companies would be wise to have a migration plan, however, so that they can efficiently go over to DASH when the time is right.
